Tack Stolen ... 24/10/09

From a Flint and Denbigh Trainer .....

We had a lot of tack stolen on Tuesday night, so I thought it would be a good idea to warn people in case this isn't an isolated event. Most of tack was not of any great quality (I can't imagine they would get much if they sell it) so it is mostly just an inconveniene for us.

Items taken (but not holding out any great hope of finding them):
5 pony bridles
1 hunting saddle
5 general purpose saddles
numerous numnahs and girths
1 wheelbarrow
1 pair of multicoloured Western reins
1 horse hair rope

Eleri plays (mounted) Games for Wales in Dublin ... 21/10/09

EleriThank you for all your best wishes for Eleri.

We had a wonderful time and Eleri and Wally did us all proud.

Wales had a good first session on the Saturday and were =1st with Scotland, after the second session on Saturday we were overall leaders with the kids performing well.

Sunday morning went all Southern Irelands way pushing us down to 2nd and then disappointingly in the afternoon we were pushed into 3rd by the English who beat us by 1.5 points.

It was a fantastic experience and lets hope Eleri is the first of many aspiring International Flint & Denbigh members - no doubt you will all catch a glimpse of Eleri in her precious Welsh hoody!!

A special thanks to Eleri's support team - by far the largest there - Chrissie and Suzi, Gwil, Fran and Stan who was a very proud Dad and hopefully we will get to see more of him in future.

We are very fortunate to have Gwil and Fran who are both so dedicated to helping our children improve.

Eleri's games career has been very precious to both Eleri and Myself we will remember the years very fondly.

New Mounted Games Season Starts 1st November 14/10/09

Mounted Games training will begin on 1st November at Ystrad. Juniors (up to 11 years) will be at 12.30pm and Seniors (11-15 years) will be at 1.45pm. If you are interested in joining us, please either phone or email Gwil Hughes and more information can be sent.

We had a fantastic season in 2009, with 22 riders making 5 teams, two of whom qualified for Zone and one made it to the Championships. Eleri Jones has also been chosen to represent Wales in an international friendly this weekend (17th and 18th October 2009) in Ireland. We hope to have an equally sucessful year in 2010.

Gwil Hughes also organises Pony Racing in the F&D branch. If you have any interest in this please contact us and we can give you more information.

Mini Burghley Event Pony Competition 08/09/2009

SistersNatalie & Stephanie Hughes competed in The Mini Burghley Event Pony Competition  which was held at Burghley Horse Trials last Sunday, 6th Septmber 2009.

This competition is designed to give our Pony Club 'Eventing Stars of the Future' the chance and experience of competing at the prestigious Burghley Horse Trials. Our Branch was invited to send two members.

SisterNatalie & Stephanie had to ride a dressage test and then complete a show jumping round before continuing straight onto the short XC course.

Over 70 competitors took part and both our members rode to a very high standard. Stephanie was placed 3rd overall and Natalie 11th.

Congratulations to you both.

Massive success for Seniors ... 05/09/2009

They came, they saw, they made few mistakes … and really deserved a better result.
The team of

  • Eleri Jones (Timmy),
  • Mari Edwards (Tilly),
  • Anna Hickey Roberts (Lielie),
  • Sam Major (Nibbs) and
  • Suzi Williams (Tickety Boo)

qualified for one of the Runners Up Finals with 15 other teams, for the last spot in the Prince Philip Cup Finals at HOYS.

ChampionsThere were 3 heats of each race, with only the first two going through to the final. And in 6 of the 10 races, F&D came 3rd in their heat, only narrowly missing 2nd on a few occasions. They also had two 4th, a 5th and a 6th. So unfortunately they only gained a point from each of their heats and finished in joint 15th place.

They deserved a better ending to the competition and to their season: they have gone from strength to strength all year. Nevertheless, they are still the first F&D senior team to reach the Zone finals since 1997, and the first to reach the PC Championships for about 30 years (I believe). They have set a new standard for future teams to reach and exceed. And I hope they realise how much they achieved, even if the end result was a little disheartening.

And a final word to all our PPC competitors this year, as we are about to end our season with the display at the Denbigh Show…

Thank you all for your dedication and enthusiasm throughout the year. Very few pony clubs get the chance to take 5 teams to local competitions. We have been incredibly fortunate to have so many of you interested in competing and improving. I hope you all return next season, with a few new ones!

Sam Ecroyd Wins National Novice Championships 05/09/2009

Sam EckroydCongratulations to Sam Ecroyd for winning the National Novice Horse Trials Championships at Kelsall Hill.

Sam was also a member of the Flint & Denbigh Hunt Pony Club show Jumping Team that qualified and competed at the National Novice Championships at Kelsall. The course was very challenging and the team did very well. The other members were Ollie Powel Jones, Stephanie Hughes and Ellie Williams. The F&D team were 2nd in the tack & turnout.

Nan Jones competed as an individual and had two very good rounds. Well done.
Grace Pritchard & Lucy Grindal qualified for the National Novice Dressage Championships and did very well.

Thank you to the team trainers for all their hard work getting the children and ponies ready for these competitions and last but not least thank you to the parents for encouraging the children and giving them great opportunities with their ponies.

"B" test success 05/09/2009

Congratulations to the following who were successful at passing the "B" test

  • Maddy Rytter,
  • Megan Bryant &
  • Catrin Pickles

Congratulations to Sophie Toogood 05/09/2009

SophieCongratulations to Sophie Toogood who was placed 4th at the championships in the individual show jumping competition at the Pony Club National Championships Open Show Jumping Competition which took place on the 15th and 16th August in Draycott House, Derbyshire.

The team Open Show Jumping Competition took place on the 15th August. Our Open Team consisted of George Sturla, Katy Kent, Sophie Toogood and Lois Roberts. There were 18 teams entered and our team achieved a very credible 5th in the Tack and Turnout competition.

Every member of the team had mixed fortunes throughout the day each jumping two rounds over two very difficult courses.

Final team placing of 14th, however team spirit was very high which made the day very special for all.

  • Sophie and Dillon qualified for the Individual Open competition held on Sunday the 16th.
  • 57 competitors from Pony Clubs all over the British Isles jumped in the 1st round. Only 17 jumped clear. Sophie was included in the 17!
  • In the 2nd round held in the afternoon, the bar was raised, literally! The course builder increased the height and technicality of the course; so much so only 4 of the 17 competitors were able to jump a double clear to go into the jump off for final placings.
  • To increase the anticipation Sophie and Dillon were one of the 4!

SophieIn the final jump off Sophie and Dillon tried to beat the very fast time set by the first competitor and unfortunately gained 4 faults in doing so. As a result of this they finished in a very respectable 4th  place overall.

Sophie has been a consistant member of the Winter League Team and as an individual won most of the open classes last season. Sophie has been an active pony club member attending rallies and training sessions. Over the last few years Sophie has been a member of games teams, quiz teams and horse trials teams.

Well done Sophie and please continue to represent the F&D in the future.
