This year the Pony Club launched Endurance riding as an official Pony Club discipline. The Pony Club Endurance Championships will take place at the College EC, Bedfordshire on 20 September 2009. Full details about the types of endurance rides, the associated rules, the Championship and the rides that are taking place in 2009 are all available on the Pony Club website: www.pcuk.org/Disciplines/Endurance

Endurance riding is a fun discipline which tests you and your horse's fitness, your riding and horse management skills and your ability to not get lost! Rides of various distances are run, starting at the 8km (5 miles) Merlin ride right up to a 50 km (30 miles) Eagle ride. Each of these rides must be completed at a certain speed e.g. for a Kestrel ride, between 8 -15 kph. An important part of the discipline of Endurance is to pass a vetting (trot up and heart rate) before and after the ride.

Endurance rides will be organised by both the Pony Club and Endurance G.B. Details of these rides can be found on their websites and those of Pony Club branches and local Endurance GB groups. For the F&D, Cheshire is the local group. Details of their next 2 endurance events (which will include Pony Club classes) - Wirral on 4 July and Clocaenog Forest on 6 September and several pleasure rides can be found at: www.endurancegbcheshire.co.uk

The Bedale and West of Yore Pony Club are running the Northern Pony Clubs Endurance Challenge at Clifton Castle, nr. Bedale on Sun 5th July. Open to all, whether Pony Club Members or not, adults or children. You can choose between two routes, one of 18 and the other of 30km in the beautiful Lower Wensleydale, testing your own and your horses fitness by achieving the set distance at an approved time.
