Novice Championship at Kelshall ... 01/09/2010

The TeamCongratulations to the show jumping team who finished 4th out of 40 teams at the National Novice Champs at Kelsall.

The course was very tough and caused numerous problems to the competitors, but the Flint & Denbigh Team of Wednesday, Nan, Brier and Ellie were well prepared and finished on a team total of 4 faults.

Brier was one of the few competitors to have a double clear.

MemberThank you to Jane Gough Roberts for training the team and helping them towarm up on the day.

Congratulations also to Phoebie Woodbine for finshing 5th at the Champs in the Individual Dressage.

Championship report from Sophie Toogood ... 01/09/2010

Hi Bethan,

Thanks for you support prior to the event. I lust thought I would send you a brief (sorry not so brief) resume of the happenings according to the Show Jumping event.
And what a lot of happenings there were!

Firstly we set off on Friday the Thirteenth, didn’t think it would be a bad omen, this date has never affected us before … But!

As we set off from Pwll Glas all packed, scrubbed and ready on our way via the Shell garage, we noticed that the windscreen wipers on our lorry weren’t working. Slight panic set in as the forecast for Friday pm was heavy rain.

Fortunately we passed Deeside Trucks just passed Mold, darted in there and after about an hour the very kind chap had temporarily fixed them, Great!

Off we went again, wanting to arrive early enough to settle Dillon in the lovely ‘canvas box’ for the plaiting session and final scrub up before bedding down for the night.

However, Friday the thirteenth reared its ugly head again and we had a tyre blow out about 2 miles onto the A500. It must have been the scariest thing I have ever experienced. Sandy was driving and I was sat directly above the offending wheel. It was like a bomb!!

After being temporary paralysed with fear, Sandy managed to keep the lorry straight and stopped on the inside lane with no further trauma, to the lorry, us or thankfully Dillon. It was now about 6.15pm and everyone using the road were clearly wanting to get to their destination and were flying passed us at break neck speed. We called the police who came after about 5 mins and to cut a long story short (I could go on and on!) the wheel was changed on the side of the road and we were back on our way after another delay, this time 2 hours!

Finally we arrived in the pitch black, with rain imminent at 10pm. By the time we had found our lovely canvas box and bedding that we purchased at a horrific rate, (£13.20 for 2 very small bales of cardboard boxes, we’ll not do that again!) the rain was coming down in torrents and we were filthy! No, plaiting tonight and not much sleep had by anyone!

Saturday – individual Show Jumping.

There were 54 competitors on the start list.

Sophie and Katie Kent jumped off in the first round and both went clear. Katie has really got it together with Zebedee and they were jumping well. Dillon didn’t appear too affected by his 6 hour journey on the previous day.

The weather was kind to us and we managed to avoid the rain for the second round. There were 27 clears from the first round so the second round was made a lot stiffer with a change of course and much higher jumps.

Both Katie and Sophie got 4 faults in the second round. Zebedee hit the first and Dillon kept us waiting and hit the last! Sophie was extremely disappointed as she wanted to better her score from last year.

There were only 6 double clears who jumped off for the first 6 placings.

Amazingly both Sophie and Katie had fast enough second rounds to achieve 8th and 9th places respectively with 4 faults. Interestingly enough Emily Barnes who won our Area Competition from East Cheshire came 10th. Excellent result for Area 5!

Sunday – Team Show Jumping.

Katie and Sophie were up early and worked hard on the boys for the turn out competition.

The competition also had an early start with the first competitors jumping at 8.15am.
George and Heidi both arrived in good time and were both beautifully presented. Tack check and turn out was judged first thing, for presentations at lunch time. They looked fab as a team!

First round

Katie went first with an unfortunate 4 faults, Heidi managed 18 faults, but with 2 down and a ‘refusal’. Bit of a technicality, the horse jumped her out of the saddle and she couldn’t make the treble so circled to be safe, then got 6 time penalties. George got 3 down, so 12 faults and Sophie went clear. Team finished on 16 faults, joint 12th.

Lunch time presentation

There were 20 teams but FnD looked great, I was hoping for that to be reflected in the turnout competition especially as last year they managed to get 5th. Unfortunately they didn’t get anything but the standard across the board was very high.

Second round.

Katie had 8 faults, tricky combinations catching lots of people out, Heidi had 20, she seemed a little hesitant and didn’t give her horse his head, but he tried. George had 8 faults again very tricky striding. Then Sophie approached the combination, jump 5 and Dillon launched from at least 2 strides away and came down directly onto the oxer, demolishing it! It was taken away in bits and Sophie, who wasn’t hurt decided to retire as it was a crashing fall for both of them. It was a real shame as given a reasonable score in the second round they may well, despite all the faults have done ok. There was only 1 team on clear after the first round and lots of cricket scores. So even scoring 52 after 2 rounds they had not dropped a place.

I am not sure of the final score as we did leave but I think Katie (who stayed) calculated 11th or 12th final score.

We can and will do better next year, but once again a fabulous experience for us all.
Sorry about the length of this ‘brief report’ but thought you may like to know the detail!

I’m not sure how Nicky Rae has got on but it seemed to be a weekend of lorry trouble. I do hope they are ok.

Many thanks
Gill, Sophie and Sandy

Area 5 Show Jumping Message from DC... 13/07/2010

Dear All,

Thank you for all your help in making our Area Show Jumping competition such a success.

Thank you to all who turned up on the Weds evening, Saturday afternoon and all day Sunday. The competition ran so smoothly and without any major problems.

The list of thank you's - for collecting ring stewards, arena parties, catering stewards, judges helpers, commentators, scorers, car parking stewards is endless.

Our members were excellent at being helpful, polite and friendly  – so thank you!

Our day was perfect and to cap it all the Open team & Novice team qualified for the champs – CONGRATULATIONS. Well done to all the other teams to, as they also were placed and were a credit to our Branch.

The Newcomers team also won their class.

Chris Leahy deserves a special thank you for all her hard work organising the teams and for all the training that she organises through out the year.

Iona as always was organised and had everything to hand. She is now the expert on the Pony Club Show jumping Rules. Thank you.

I was amazed at how quickly everything was dismantled at the end of the day. There were many comments from the visiting branches at how friendly the competition was.

Good luck to those who will be going to the championships.

Best regards

Bethan (DC)

Area 5 Show Jumping (Dyfnog) 2010 ... 06/07/2010

If you have been attending the show jumping training or been a Winter league competitor- this is an ideal time to give your branch some voluntary help. The branch has subsidised a great deal of the training throughout the year.

Please see the rota here for the duties for Sunday at Dyfnog.

Please note following points when doing your duty:

  • Practice fence stewards- Competitors to jump in same direction, fence must not be higher than the jumps in the ring.

Collecting ring stewards:

  • no more than 12 competitors in the collecting ring at once
  • next competitor to be entering ring just as the previous one is finishing, as this saves time

Tack & turnout steward

  • to get teams together for inspection

Arena party supervisors -

  • ensure the safety of the children putting up poles
  • children must not run in front of a horse or pony that is in the ring

If you are unable to carry out your duty please arrange to have someone else to stand in.

The competition will start at 10 am but tack & turn out will start at 9.30am. Please be punctual.

I still require parents to help organise the parking. This will only be for a couple of hours in the morning 8.45am - 10.45am. Ideally it would suit some of the fathers.

Please contact Bethan (DC) by email or mobile 07887722583 (before 9.00pm) if you can help!
