Iona's Weekly Update
Week August 31st 2010
The Pony Club Annual 2010
I hope some of the F&D members will be able to send stories & pictures in for the 2010 PC Annual.
Dear all,
Please would you be kind enough to forward this email around to your Branches, to ask them and their Members to send in their wonderful pictures, stories, drawings and anything they would like included in The Pony Club Annual for 2010.
I will be putting The Annual together over the next month, with it due to go to print at the beginning of October so copy really needs to cover over to me, either electronically (media@pcuk.org) or marked for my attention: The Pony Club, Stoneleigh Park, Kenilworth, Warks CV8 2RW, as soon as possible.
Although The Annual is a review of the year it is the Members copy that really makes it, and I would love to include as much of it as possible so please do encourage Members to send it in.
Thank you in advance of your help,
Best Regards
Clare

A Thank You from Rebecca Pritchard
Dear Bethan
Just a little email to say a HUGE thank you to you and the rest of the committee for all your help and guidance but to let you know that after the Plas Uchaf PC & LRC X/C in September I will be resigning from the Llysfaen Branch Committee.
After four to five years of helping and running the Llysfaen rallies I must mention that I really can't thank Helga and Simon enough for their unbelievable dedication, patience and help in teaching the children not only in their riding ability but also the importance of the Pony Club ethos.
As a new comer in 1996 to the world of the Pony Club, the Flint and Denbigh Hunt Branch have helped us all, Drew has been proud to assist in sponsorship where ever possible, Grace, who has been hooked from day one and her riding skills have gone from strength to strength, now understands that in life you must put back what you have taken out and my ridiculous idea, that after watching my children's hundreds of Pony Club lessons entitles me to buy a horse, join the hunt and jump fences built for the brave is something I still question !.
I am still here to help the Pony Club and I will be here to assist the hunt.
In the meantime please do not hesitate to contact me
Kind regards and best wishes to your family
Rebecca

We are commissioning a very special HOYS Commorative/Coffee table style book due to be launched next year.
We are also particularly interested in ‘where are they now’ stories so if you have PC members that started in the Prince Philip Cup and have gone onto adult success in SJ and/or Showing?
I am also compiling a list for the author of personalities integral to the history of HOYS. I am sure there is a host of people that have made the Pony Club’s inclusion at the show memorable but if you have any really specific people we shouldn’t miss, perhaps you could also forward those ideas to me?
We are still very much in the planning stages so if you feel there is something that absolutely needs including, do not hesitate to let me know.
I look forward to hearing from you.

AREA SHOW JUMPING
Dear All,
Thank you for all your help in making our Area Show Jumping competition such a success.
Thank you to all who turned up on the Weds evening, Saturday afternoon and all day Sunday. The competition ran so smoothly and without any major problems.
The list of thank you's - for collecting ring stewards, arena parties, catering stewards, judges helpers, commentators, scorers, car parking stewards is endless.
Our members were excellent at being helpful, polite and friendly – so thank you.
Our day was perfect and to cap it all the Open team & Novice team qualified for the champs – CONGRATULATIONS. Well done to all the other teams too, as they also were placed and were a credit to our Branch.
The Newcomers and the Intermediate Teams were both 2nd in their class.
Full Results will be on the F&D web site and can be downloaded here (.doc) Photographs available from www.LluniauDewi.com / Dewi's Photographs and also RING 1 www.peterowenphotography.co.uk
Chris Leahy deserves a special thank you for all her hard work organising the teams and for all the training that she organises through out the year.
Iona as always was organised and had everything to hand. She is now the expert on the Pony Club Show jumping Rules. Thank you.
I was amazed at how quickly everything was dismantled at the end of the day. There were many comments from the visiting branches at how friendly the competition was.
We were also asked by Mr Gough Roberts and Jane from Dyfnog Stud and asked to pass on their thanks to all, for leaving the site so clean & tidy. They were very impressed as there was no rubbish left to clear at all. So Thank You for taking your rubbish home!!
Good luck to those who will be going to the championships.
Best regards ... Bethan
AREA 5 DRESSAGE COMPETITION
Please find attached the schedule for this year's Area Dressage to be held at Somerford park Farm on TUESDAY the 3rd AUGUST 2010.
You will note that this is a two stage entry system:
Stage 1: Preliminary entries to be submitted by Tuesday the 13th July. This stage only requires numbers of teams and individuals to be indicated together with the entry fee.
Stage 2: Which requires full details of each rider and horse, does not need to be submitted until Sunday the 25th July.
It is essential that we know exactly how many entries to expect since this is crucial to deciding the number of arenas and judges. Please therefore let us know numbers as a matter of urgency. If you are experiencing any difficulty - please let us know.
It is appreciated that the time is short and I apologise for that but if we are to make the necessary arrangements we do need full co-operation.
We look forward to hearing from you.
PLEASE NOTE: The Pony Club Intermediate Dressage Test 2009 on page 41 of the Dressage Rule Book 2010 has the following typo.
Movement 2 should read:
2. B Circle right 15m diameter. Give and retake the reins on the circle.

REMINDER TO ALL PARENTS MEMBERS COMPETING AT ANY DISCIPLINE
As so many of our members are out and about competing at different venues over the summer months could I please ask you all to familiarize your selves with the Rules before the Competition. You should all have the relevant Rule Books. You are representing the Flint & Denbigh Hunt Branch of the Pony Club and your behaviour is a reflection on our Branch.
Can I please ask you all to read the paragraph " Unseemly Behaviour"
Unseemly behaviour on the part of riders, team officials, or team supporters will be reported as soon as possible by the Officials to PC HQ and they may be penalised by disqualification of the Branch or Branches concerned for a period of 3 years. Any competitor or supporter who in the opinion of the Official Steward has been rude or aggressive towards any official at a competition or who has behaved in an aggressive or unfair manner to their horse may be disqualified.
HELP AT MIMI CAMP
If we have any members, school year 9 or above, who would like to help at Mini Camp, could you please email Katy on katy@hendrerwyddfarm.com. Whole days or all of mini camp (3 days), lunch will be provided. This can be used as part of your community service if you are working towards your Duke of Edinburgh Award.
HUNTING CERTIFICATE
Even if you have told me you want to do this please contact me again
All Pony Club members who are 14 years old by 1st September 2010 who would like to come out hunting with the Flint and Denbigh Hunt this season must let me know as soon as possible and no later than Thursday 22nd July 2010. Either ring me on 01745 582421/07850 593168 or email cefncronies@aol.com This gives you all a month to talk to your friends and see who is doing it with you, anyone who gives their name in after Thursday 22nd July, will have to possibly wait until next year.
You must be able to attend the gate shutting and hunting talk on Tuesday 27th July (at main camp). (If you are not going to be at main camp this year let me know. You will need to bring your pony with you for 12pm).
You and your parents have to then be dedicated on Saturdays, we also go out on Tuesday's and Thursday's (on foot) if you want to come out in holiday time!
You have to do a minimum of 3 days Autumn Hunting (end of August- end of October, early morning's) and as many days as possible during the open season (end October-beginning of March). We usually have two Pony Club meets (weather permitting) for all Pony Club members to come out hunting and you are expected to come out on Pony Club meet days.
If you are taking the hunting certificate this enables you to come out hunting without mounted guardian, (your guardian must be following in a vehicle).
Whilst taking the Hunting Certificate we look at your attendance (minimum of 3 days autumn hunting and many days in the open season), ability on a suitable horse/pony, your conduct whilst out hunting and being willing and able to do gates without prompting. You will be given a written/oral test (usually towards the end of the season).
I would think that 98% of our young hunt supporters have come up through the Pony Club. No matter what type of pc activity you prefer, coming out hunting greatly improves your riding ability and teaches you respect and consideration of those around you. It is a wonderful way to spend your Saturday's and have the honour of riding over some of Wales' most beautiful countryside.
Obviously you will need your parents/ guardian's permission, but, I would like to hear from the Pony Club members themselves. Let me have your emails, so I can contact you.
I have also had some interest from parents wanting to do it too, so that they understand what is going on when they come out hunting, we would love any parent or older member who is interested to contact me too, or of course Louise Shepperd.
I look forward to hearing from you all.

PLEASE READ
Hi everyone,
Just to let you know that a lovely welsh sec D living in a roadside field next door to Hafod y Coed in Tremeirchion has been found to have had a 5 inch strip cut out of her mane about quarter the way down from her ears. The police say it could be that thieves have marked her to be stolen in the next few days. They will then mark the field with something like a bollard or bike wheel, and come back to pick her up.
It might be an idea if this could be posted on the riding club and Pony Club websites, or just pass it on to everyone in the area just as a precaution.
Many thanks

Dear All,
As you know the Sir WWW held their show jumping competition last week and had two very rude parents to deal with - nothing new there you
say!! But actually this is happening far too often now ...
Hi everyone,
If you are interested in representing the branch at the 2010 Area show jumping competition on July 11th please read the attached schedule and here for part two. Also please read the relevant sections of the PC SJ rule book to check that you and your pony/horse comply, i.e. 3 rallies, correct tack etc etc. (if you do not have the current rule book you can read it on-line on the Pony Club website). Then send the correct payment by cheque made out to the Flint and Denbigh branch of the Pony Club to myself asap. PLEASE write on the reverse of the cheque, members name, age and name of pony/horse and the class you wish to be considered for.
I will be arranging a selection night in the next couple of weeks for everyone interested in taking part so please send your cheques to me asap.

Dear All,
Please could you give a gentle nudge to all your B Test candidates to check they are going to attend the study days. The Welsh one is on July 19th at Dyfnog Stud and the Cheshire one is on July 26th at Delamere. I realise these may clash with camps but it will benefit the candidates if they can attend.
Also please could you nudge your senior members who would like to attend Area 5 Senior Camp .
Many thanks. Jenny Benoy Area 5 Rep

Ruthin Show ... Top show jumping returns to Ruthin 26/27 June 2010
After an absence of many years Ruthin will once again stage a top show jumping event. As part of the fantastic Medieval World and Country Show the organisers Ruthin Forward have included two days of show jumping and showing covering qualifiers for British Show Jumping, Veteran Society, and British Show Pony Society, as well as all unaffiliated classes for locals.
Not only will competitors be able to compete in their own events they will also be able to enjoy the main show which highlights medieval life with jousting knights, foot combat re enactments, living history and countryside skill and crafts. The theme of the county show is interactive where participants can join in lots of skills - even inter active cookery. This is truly an event not to be missed. Full details and downloadable entry form can be found on www.ruthinforward.co.uk (schedule also attached).
We are also looking for stewards for this event – if you are interested we can reward you with lunch and free entry to the show! Please email chrissie@equest.plus.com to register your interest.
Many thanks

LLYSFAEN DISTRICT CROSS COUNTRY
Hi Iona,
The Plas Uchaf Cross Country was a success, and what a sunny day it was, I don’t know whether you knew but I was the official photographer on the day and although I had a display board next to the entry secretary’s lorry when I came back the wind had blown it over and therefore wasn’t visible (nobody picked it up) so I imagine many people are unaware that I was there.
Would you please include the following quick link to my website in your next weekly Pony Club update as there are some really nice images of competitors doing their thing and would you also mention that I am available to cover any Pony/Riding club event in the future.
Thanks Iona ... Peter.

FROM Pony Club HQ
Last year the Thoroughbred Breeders Association (TBA) organised for Members of the Flamstead Branch to visit Newmarket. The day consisted of an introduction to training grounds of Newmarket, followed by a visit to the British Racing School and a tour of the National Stud.
The TBA felt that this day was highly successful and would now like to offer the opportunity to more Branches to see how the racing industry works from studs through to racing yards.
The Management Committee met recently and they all agreed that this offer from the TBA with the backing of our President, Lady Lloyd Webber would be a excellent opportunity of our Members.
Therefore, Regional Representatives from the TBA may be contacting Branches in the future to the arrange a possible visit.
I would be grateful if you could please let your Branches know.

IMPORTANT PLEASE READ
Last week I reminded members about "what to wear to rallies." This week can I please remind you not to tie hay nets up outside your trailers and lorries at Rallies (unless you are in a field & the landowner does not mind) and to make sure you clean up all droppings.
When you join Pony Club and on several occasions during the year a copy of Pony Club Rules are sent out to you with the Weekly Update. There is also a copy on the website under "What to wear to rallies". Can you all please read through it again and make sure you are aware of all the points made.
I have copied a paragraph for you all to read below:
Please be courteous, please leave dogs at home and take your litter home. When attending rallies at Ystrad please park considerably in the car park, remember there are a lot of vehicles coming at different times for rides and need to get in/out easily. The farm is strictly out of bounds and children must be kept under control at all times. Do not tie hay nets up to the outside of your trailers/boxes for your horses/ponies to eat at Rallies as it makes an awful mess.
Clean up all droppings even if your animal didn’t drop them.
F&D RIDING CLUB
The Flint and Denbigh Riding Club have organised a demo by Gillian Higgins at Northop College on 20th May, titled "Working with the anatomy of the horse". Details attached.
Ragwort
The Daily Post which is a local North Wales newspaper (Andrew Forgrave, Farming Editor) is going to produce a grid map of all the worst places where ragwort is rife. The area to be covered will be from Welshpool to N.W.Wales. He has asked Rose Brooke as press Officer for BHS to let as many people know as possible. Would be very grateful if you could "round robin" all our members in those areas. Riders can contact him at AndrewForgrave@dailypost .co.uk he is hoping to get something in print by Thursday next. So we need to get the ball rolling!

MUSICAL RIDE
Musical ride practice has started and A BIG THANK YOU to those dedicated enthusiastic few who came. They went really well. However, turnout was disappointing and we need more to join. All ages welcome, from Lead Rein upwards.
PRACTICE ... FRIDAY 6.30 - 8 AT THE WERN, LLANDYRNOG - lovely flat field. The horses need exercising anyway so why not exercise them at the Musical ride? It is not a major commitment - only once a week. It would be nice to be recognised as a club for musical rides and give other Branches a run for their money!!
We are planning a treat/reward/trip for all those who take part. Please don't think your horse will not be good enough - it is amazing how quickly they all settled and got into a routine, even those who had not done it before. The benefits outweigh the negatives by a mile!
So please email Meg Green Megww@aol.com to let her know you are coming - it is not too late to join in!!

The Pony Club: Equestrian access to Cycle Paths
This is an enquiry e-mail via http://www.pcuk.org from: Caroline Clayden
I am writing to ask for your help as CEO of the Pony Club. As part of The Trust's continuing campaign for equestrian access to all cycle paths in the Country we have created a Government Petition asking for legislation to ensure all non-motorised users are treated equally. We now know the Department of Transport's view that equestrians should have access to cycle paths 'wherever suitable' provides a let-out for all those Councils who continue to discriminate against this minority user group.
We very much hope that the Pony Club will support our campaign and I can send you some more information on it if you feel you can help. We have recently successfully campaigned to get a cycle path near here open so that now the RDA can use it, instead of being forced to use dangerous roads. If The Pony Club believes in fairness and equal access please could you ask all your branches to ask all members to sign this petition.
David Cameron is on record as saying he believes any petition that has 100,000 signatures should be debated by Parliament. So that is our target - 100,000 by September 11th irrespective of who wins the election. There are millions of horse riders, cyclists and walkers who use the nation's network of bridleways, and we hope everyone will present a united front on this important safety issue.
Use the following link and sign up now:
http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/Access4All/
If anyone uses Twitter, Facebook or UTube please ask them to spread the word and ask everyone who walks, cycles or rides to support this campaign.
Thank you
Caroline Clayden, Trustee & Director, The Trails Trust

CRB Checks
Just a reminder that ANY ONE staying at Mini Camp with their own children, helping at camp where you may be supervising alone with a group or a child , especially night watch, will need a Pony Club CRB check. They are no longer transferable from one organisation to another, so even if you do have one with your work you will still need to have a Pony Club check. Forms are available from Bethan or myself but we do need to see the original supporting documents, not photocopies.Thank you to all who turned up at Cefn last week.
